Dubai Tourism
Years ago, Dubai was considered a small fishing village on the edge of desert. In recent years, the landscape of Dubai has changed dramatically, and Dubai Tourism has grown exponentially during this time (especially over the past 10 years).
Much of this growth has to do with the vision of the late Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid al Maktoum who served as Emir of Dubai from 1990 – 2006. His vision was to make Dubai the number one tourist and financial center in the region and eventually the world. His vision began to develop into a reality in 1994 with the start of construction of the Burj Al Arab, the only 7-Star Hotel in the World. The Sheikh sought to establish an iconic structure to grace the Dubai Skyline and become a symbol of the city. The symbol – the sail of a “Dhow”, a traditional-style boat frequently seen in the Arabian Gulf. Its doors opened in December of 1999. Soon after, innovative ideas to increase Dubai’s coastline and beachfront property were in development, and the creation of the Palm Jumeirah, referred to as the 8th Wonder of the World, was completed by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, continuing the vision of his eldest brother’s dream. The Palm Jumeirah is the host of the fabulous Atlantis Hotel which includes the 42- acre Aquaventure Water Park with its 61 metre long, vertical drop water slide, and Dolphin Bay where guest can intermingle with these gentle creatures, as well as many other attractions offered at the resort.
To add to these amazing undertaking, Dubai is also the home to the “World’s Tallest Building”, the Burj Khalifa, opening its doors in January 2010, it stands over 828 metres tall. The Burj Khalifa provides the most breathtaking views of this magnificent city from its Observation Deck located on the 124th floor. At its base stands the ever popular Dubai Mall, touted as one of the region’s largest, besides its vast array of shops, it offers an aquarium and underwater zoo, an indoor ice-skating rink, a family entertainment zone, and the Dubai Fountains with their beautiful dancing waters (a show within itself). Dubai is also known as the shopping mecca of the region. With over 45 shopping venues to choose from, tourists can enjoy everything from posh designer shops to traditional-style souks, and everything in between. There are also plenty of family activities to enjoy. Tourists can enjoy Wild Wadi Water Park in Jumeirah Beach, or to “cool down” tourists can experience Ski Dubai, the first indoor Ski Resort in the region, located in the Mall of the Emirates. For evening entertainment, Deira offers a number of night clubs one to enjoy.
Dubai offers many first-class hotels and resorts in which to choose. In addition, you will be amazed by all that Dubai has to offer. It is no wonder why it has become one of the top Tourist Spots in the World!
